On Mon, Oct 19, the UCLA Bruins football program announced that starting QB Nico Iamaleava would be out for the rest of the 2026 season due to a knee injury that he suffered in a 17-15 win over the Oregon Ducks in Week 6. Iamaleava had repeatedly risked his health on plenty of scrambles and he has spent plenty of time down on the field being tended to by athletic trainers. But this knee injury was more serious for Iamaleava, who was leading an improved offense in terms of running and passing efficiency. In five starts, Iamaleava threw for 982 yards and four touchdown passes while running for 144 yards and an additional touchdown. Having started 17 games in his first two seasons for UCLA, Iamaleava‘s stretch of availability ended in Week 7, when Ty Dieffenbach started for the Bruins in a 17-7 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers.
With Iamaleava officially out for the season and needing surgery on his severely damaged knee, UCLA must move forward and try to continue accomplishing great things under head coach Bob Chesney, who has gotten the team out to a 6-0 start. Already gaining bowl eligibility for the first time in three years, the Bruins are the ninth-ranked team in the country in the recent AP Top 25 poll and sit on top of the Big Ten Conference standings with a 4-0 record in conference games. But losing Iamaleava could prove to be a major deterrent for UCLA making it into the College Football Playoff in the 12-team format. A conference championship title would guarantee the Bruins a spot in the playoff, but if they don’t win the Big Ten title game or even appear in it, the Bruins could be knocked out of contention if they lose enough of their remaining six games. A team that faced a similar predicament of losing their starting QB and not being let into the CFP despite a strong resumé in the four-team format were the 2023 Florida State Seminoles, who lost their starting QB Jordan Travis to a devastating leg injury in a November game against North Alabama. Even though the Seminoles would go on to win the ACC Championship game, they were excluded from the Playoff due to them losing Travis. The 2026 Bruins have less margin for error with 12 spots and seven of them for “at-large” teams, but the offense will have to show improvement under Dean Kennedy’s playcalling with only 17 points scored in the last two games following offensive performances with 50+ points against Purdue and Maryland.
Dieffenbach has thrown for 307 yards in six quarters played so far in this season, throwing one touchdown pass and having one interception. Having a 6’6” frame and the ability to scramble safely, Dieffenbach will be the starting QB going forward and have Madden Iamaleava serve as his main backup. With a strong RB trio of Wayne Knight, Anthony Woods and Jaivian “Jet” Thomas along with solid receiving options such as Brian Rowe Jr, Semaj Morgan, Landon Ellis, and Aidan Mizell, Dieffenbach will have plenty of pieces to work with. There are five conference games left on the schedule for UCLA and one non-conference game against Nevada on Halloween night. The only ranked opponent currently on the Bruins’ schedule is USC(#16), which is looking for its first CFP appearance as well.
Despite losing Nico Iamaleava, this Bruins team still has a lot of potential to go on a magical run into the CFP and potentially “host” a first-round game at the Rose Bowl or secure a first-round bye if they end up being the Big Ten champions. With Chesney as the head coach, this UCLA squad can accomplish anything they put their mind to and until they are defeated legitimately, the sky is the limit for this program. Iamaleava might return in 2027 in using the fifth year in his eligibility to close out his collegiate career strong after being the starter at Tennessee for his redshirt sophomore season and leading the Volunteers into the CFP. Now the UCLA Bruins will seek to make it into the Playoff with Iamaleava sidelined for the rest of this college football season.
