Lakers Beat Sacramento in “Laugher” of a Game to Open Up March Strong, Luka & LeBron Combine For 52 Pts, 14 Assists On Sunday Night

On Sun, Mar 1, the Los Angeles Lakers played host to the Sacramento Kings in the second game of a back-to-back. They defeated the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco the night before and won 129-101 on Luka Doncic’s birthday. After a couple of tough losses at home over the past week, the Purple & Gold sought to defend their home court against the team currently holding the worst record in the NBA in Sacramento(14-47), who had lost two of their star players in Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine to season-ending injuries. With old veterans such as Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan along with younger contributors, the Kings looked to put up a fight against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. But they had another thing coming at them, which was some classic basketball from the LakeShow.

The first quarter showed an early onslaught by the Sunday-white threaded Lakers, who scored ten straight points that was capped off by an epic alley-oop dunk by LeBron James. Luka scored 12 points in the first quarter and a hot shooting performance on the floor was well underway. The Purple & Gold doubled up Sacramento with a 36-18 tally in the opening period and even though the Kings got some offensive rhythm in the second quarter, the lead was still massive and double-digits. Austin Reaves and DeAndre Ayton scored a good percentage of the points in the quarter and kept the lead high. But Westbrook scored some points to bring Sacramento closer and the score at halftime was 64-49 in favor of the Lakers.

In the third quarter, things got a little closer as the Kings used momentum sustained from their strong second quarter to cut the deficit to within ten points, forcing JJ Redick to call a timeout. But then the Purple & Gold’s offensive attack woke up and a good 11-2 run pushed the lead back up to near 20 points. A couple of threes made by Doncic(who made one after losing control of the ball and then pulling back up to launch it in fabulous fashion) and Luke Kennard pushed the lead even higher and a buzzer-beating three pointer by LeBron closed out the quarter in style. In the fourth quarter, it was all but determined that the Lakers were going to win this game as Luka didn’t even come off the bench. LeBron scored 10 points in the quarter and was taken out along with the other starters with six and a half minutes left. Some benchwarmer players came in, specifically Bronny James, who made a three-pointer that electrified the crowd. In fact, all of the players who appeared in the game for Los Angeles scored. That included an and-1 dunk by Adou Thiero and baskets from Dalton Knecht and Kobe Bufkin. The game ended with a 128-104 victory for the Lakers, who had won both games of a back-to-back for the third time this season.

Luka Doncic had an amazing game with 28 points and nine assists along with five rebounds across 29 minutes of play. LeBron James did well once again versus the team whom he made his professional debut against 23 years ago as he scored 24 points in having another 20-point performance. In fact, James also passed Michael Cooper for fifth place on the all-time Lakers assists list. So, that was another milestone to add to the King’s vault of accomplishments. Other good contributors were Reaves and Ayton, who both scored a dozen points each, and Kennard, who had 11 points off the bench. Overall, the team shot 50% from the field and made 18 three-pointers. The Kings were led in scoring by guard Nique Clifford, who tallied 26 points and had seven rebounds on the night. Other good performers for Sacramento were Maxime Raynaud with 16 points and 13 rebounds, Russell Westbrook with 14 points and five assists, and ten points each from Malik Monk and Drew Eubanks.

Overall, this was an amazing win for the Purple & Gold over their in-state rivals as they won the season-series over the Kings from the state capital three games to one. At 36-24, the Lakers remain in sixth place in the Western Conference standings, but are now a half-game behind the Denver Nuggets for fifth and a game and a half behind both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets. With back-to-back blowout wins, the Purple & Gold look to take advantage of a home-court schedule in the next two weeks before a ten-day road trip later in this month. An amazing Sunday night win can definitely show the level that this team should play at in every game going down the stretch in this 2025-26 NBA season.

Some of the Lakers players stand near the bench of the Sacramento Kings following a slight skirmish before a timeout at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Calif on Sun, Mar 1, 2026. The home record for the Purple & Gold is now 17-12 following the blowout win over Sacramento.
